Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my friends and relatives. Today also happens to be my second birthday. Or to be more accurate, it’s the second anniversary of my stem cell transplant. I have a lot of people to thank for my two “bonus” years. First, I need to thank Mary Pat who has stood by me through really rough times and has nursed me back to health. Thanks to my brother Mark who donated the stem cells that saved my life. Thanks to Dr. Hagop Kantarjian at MD Anderson who was confident he could get me into remission. His confidence was in stark contrast to the attitude of oncologists at another major hospital who told Mary Pat that I only had a week left to live. Thanks to Dr. Richard Champlin who oversaw my stem cell transplant and has kept me in relatively good health for the past two years. There are countless physician’s assistants, nurses and staff members at MD Anderson who also played an important role in giving me this extra time. I hope all of you enjoy your evening whether you are celebrating the victory of Mexican troops over the French at the Battle of Puebla or just looking for an excuse to drink margaritas. Onward and upward.
